What makes the story cooler is how this simple material became an artist’s playground. In the early 20th century, as linoleum became common, printmakers realized it was smoother and easier to carve than wood, so experimentation took off. And then Picasso showed up and treated it like a serious art form, not a “simple craft.” In the 1950s and 1960s, he pushed lino printing forward with his famous reduction linocut approach, printing multiple colors from the same block by carving and printing in stages, turning a humble slab of lino into a kind of time traveling canvas where each cut permanently changed what could come next.
