Okay, this had always been a matter of debate between many, is alcohol consumption injurious to health? Or are there any health benefits of alcohol as well?
Well, I was browsing the internet and came across an interesting piece of information. For long, we all were under the impression consumption of alcohol is injurious to health. However, after reading this blog you might want to reconsider the fact that alcohol is not as harmful as our parents think it is.
Alcoholic beverages have a substance called resveratrol which prevents platelets from sticking together and thereby reduces the risk of heart attack. Another study reveals that flavonoids and antioxidants in red wine reduce the risk of heart disease.
Alcohol is also known to increase the high-density lipoprotein (also called HDL or good Cholesterol) which makes the heart immune to heart disease. Also, consumption of alcohol in less quantity makes us more sensitive to insulin.
But again consumption of alcohol in large quantity increases the risk of heart diseases and other kinds of health problems.
Apart from reducing the risk of heart disease alcohol is also known for many other health benefits. Contrary to the old belief, new studies had found that alcohol consumption is good for your sexual health.
In an article published in www.theguardian.com, the following was reported:
Dr Kat Van Kirk believes that drinking beer can lead to four distinct improvements in the sexual experience for males: (1) delayed ejaculation, (2) enhanced libido and more intense erections, (3) increased sexual stamina and (4) that beer can help “your overall health” and thus make you less “sluggish in sex”.
Ischemic strokes results due to blood clots. As a result, blood cannot reach the brain cells and dies within minutes. This can lead to some serious brain damage. Alcohol thins the blood which reduces the risk of stroke.
However excessive consumption of alcohol can cause atrial fibrillations –a type of irregular heartbeat. This leads to blood clots in the heart that can move to the brain, it can lead to stroke.
According to a study by Dutch researchers it showed, drinking in small amounts increases your immunity towards type2 diabetes. Consumption of wine improves blood sugar balance, however; Gin can increase the risk of diabetes by 83%. When combined with daily exercise and healthy diet, consumption of wine in small amounts is beneficial for the overall health of the body.
The researchers of the University of East Anglia, UK had found that drinking 2 units of beer per day reduces the risk of developing gallstones. However heavy drinkers should not see this as a reason to stay inebriated as it can cause liver cirrhosis.
With everything said, one thing that you should understand: excessive of anything is bad. The same is applicable to alcohol as well. If you don’t have any health issues then you can consume a moderate quantity of alcohol occasionally. If you have some kind of health issues or under medication, it is always advisable to consult your doctor before consuming alcohol.
Also, there is no question of driving under the influence of alcohol. If you don’t drink at all then it is advisable not to start drinking right away after reading this article. If you are a heavy drinker, refrain from doing so as it harms your liver to a great extent.
So next time when you are drinking on the weekends, don’t victimize yourself or feel guilty about drinking. After all, you know what’s best for you, it’s better to enjoy responsibly.
Cheers ☺
