DAY 0 – Depart for Munnar

Whether you’re travelling solo or with a group, male or female, with family or friends, if you’ve been with Plan The Unplanned before, you know none of that really matters once you set foot in that bus and begin your journey from Banglore. We bid a joyful farewell to the city life as we escape for the weekend to the beauty that is Munnar and our outdoor leaders soon get into action doing what they do best- turning you lot of strangers into one big happy family! Once all the fun and frolic has come to a cease, get some good nights sleep as a long and adventurous day awaits you the next day.

DAY 1 – Chokramudy Hills Trek, Jeep Ride and Camping

Don’t be surprised if you see heaven when you look outside the window today! You’re not dead, it’s only Munnar. Open your eyes to the first rays of light as our bus rolls into this paradise on Earth. Sprawling green tea estates welcome you on either side along with its crisp and chilly weather as we head into Munnar town. After a long nights bus journey, freshen yourselves up in our dormitories and get pumped up on some lip-smacking Kerala style breakfast before heading to our first adventure for the day.

We begin our trek from Pothamedu towards the Chokramudy hills. This roughly two-kilometre trek (one way), although doesn’t lead to the Chokramudy peak, is not to be dealt lightly as it is every bit as adventurous as it is challenging. Although the actual Chokramudi peak is currently out of bounds for tourists, this trek of ours takes you right adjacent to it from where the Chokramudy peak seems to be just within our grasps.

The initial part of the hike is a forest trail through dense forest cover with canopies of trees hovering above your heads. Signs of civilisation start to blur out as we move ahead further and further up the trail into the unknown. The forests now open up into vast green grasslands in contrast to the bright blue sky above and those stunning views that had evaded you until now finally come into view. The town of Munnar now lies beneath you scattered amidst a carpet of tea plantations, thick forests and glorious hills in the distance, all enveloped in a thick blanket of mist, making for quite the view. Continue your trek uphill to the peak as the mist now plays hide and seek on the trail, enveloping you completely in one second only to disappear into nothingness almost immediately.

Once at the top, take in the glorious 360-degree view of the surrounding areas and also of the Chokramudy Peak standing intimidatingly up ahead way above the clouds. Have your packed lunches and spend some time here to give your tired legs a rest or click away on your cameras the various sights that nature has to offer all around before starting our trek back down.

Once back, climb on to your respective jeeps as we head to explore some of the unseen and inner trails of Munnar only known to the locals. As the ride gets bumpier, the sights get even better. Covered with greenery all around, lose yourselves to the beauty that is Munnar as it surprises your senses at every corner. This bumpy jeep ride finally comes to an end a short hike away from our campsite. This short hike, however, is an adventure on its own through thick forests trails and slippery grasslands until finally, the campsite comes into view located on the edge of a cliff. Given its remote location, expect only the bare facilities here with the main objective being to be one with nature. Once here, settle yourselves down and sit back and enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views of Munnar that very few travellers ever get to see. The various hues of orange and yellow scattered across the dusky sky add to the spectacle and are guaranteed to make you feel like you never want to leave.

Learn the art of pitching a tent which will be your humble abode for the night and as the last rays of daylight disappear, know what it truly means to be ’lit’ as the night sky literally lights up with innumerable stars for you to gaze at. As the temperatures drop, gather yourselves around the campfire and keep yourselves warm with some interesting stories and a few laughs. Enjoy a hot meal under the open skies soon after as you spend the night with some good company in paradise.

DAY 2 – Sunrise Trek to Lakshmi Hills & Explore Munnar

Don’t let all the fun of the previous night stop you from getting a good nights sleep as you will need all the energy to have an early rise and start the hike up Lakshmi Hills to catch the Sunrise. Given the steep hike, we advise you to take it slow and enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the destination as you catch a glimpse of the first rays of the Sunlight peeking out from above the adjoining hills in the distance. The trail consists of ten Crosses placed intermittently all the way to the top of the peak as is typical of many Hills here and is referred to by the locals as ‘Kurushumala’ literally meaning ‘Cross-Hill’. Whether you make it to the tenth cross in time for the sunrise or not, enjoy the stunning array of light nevertheless before attempting the rest of the hike.

Once at the top, the breathtaking views shall give you a kick higher than any drug and you will soon find yourself energised despite the steep climb. After spending some time at the peak, take a relaxing walk along the trail over the adjoining ridge that actually leads all the way to Munnar town. But that’s a trek for another day! Return to the campsite right in time for a well-earned breakfast and cool yourselves down with some fun activities at the campsite before packing up your bags again and starting the hike back to the bus.

The rest of the day will be spent exploring the various sights and smells that Munnar has to offer at our own pace before having lunch and starting our journey back to Bangalore. Whether you’re visiting Munnar for the first time or for the tenth, these beautiful hills are bound to leave a mark on you for years to come. The various sights, smells, people and experiences that this place offer makes it visiting this place worthwhile, every single time.
