Have you been keen on exploring Chikmagalur over the weekends, and wondering how you can do a quick trek exploring the hidden trails? Well, Plan The Unplanned is here with an amazing deal for you! Gear up ‘coz we’re gonna take you to Mullayanagiri, the highest peak in Karnataka, which is located in the Chandra Dhrona Hill Ranges of the Western Ghats in Chikmagalur district.
Situated at an altitude of 1950 m, it is regarded as the highest peak between Himalayas and Nilgiris. The trekking trails on the Mullayangiri Hills will take you through some of the most rustic and lovely pathways. Named after Mullappa Swami Temple at the summit, Mullayanagiri is regarded as one of the best trekking spots in Karnataka and among the top tourist places in Chikmagalur. Being the highest peak in Karnataka, Mullayanagiri offers some very interesting trails.
The trek route to the peak begins from Sarpadaari, which is well connected by road with Chikmagalur. This is a 3 km long trek which is moderate and takes about 1.5 hours to reach the peak. The peak is adorned with verdant grassland, rugged rocks, and a good trek path. The views from the top of Mullayanagiri are breathtaking. The place is perfect for those looking for solitude as well as visitors with an adventurous streak.

We depart for our adventurous journey in the Western Ghats around 10 PM from Bangalore. Get to know more about your trek leads as well as your co-trekkers through the fun-filled and crazy icebreakers our outdoor leaders have planned for you. Once done with the introductions, get some good nights sleep as a long and adventure filled day of trekking awaits you the next day.
Once we reach the base camp in the morning, you can freshen up and have breakfast, after which we shall start out journey. Packed lunch will be provided to all.
The starting point of the trek is known as Sarpadhari owing to its serpentine paths. The trail to Mullayanagiri begins at Sarpadhari bus stop, 15 km from Chikmagalur. Interestingly, this trek has two peak point, the lower one is Mullayanagiri while the higher one is Bababudangiri which is the highest one in Karnataka. The trek up to Mullayanagiri is about 3 kilometers from the base.
About 20 minutes into the trail, Mullayanagiri comes into view, easily identifiable by the temple on the peak. The path continues to weave through hillsides and grasslands. The Sarpadhari stretch landmarks include a small stream, some caves, and a Nandi statue. About 3 km into the trail, the vegetation grows denser and a Nandi statue in a rocky shelter among shrubs comes into view. The trail becomes less steep from here as one draws closer to the peak. In this stretch, there are a couple of caves that can be explored. Mullayanagiri lies at a short distance from here.
The difficulty level of this trek can be rated from moderate to difficult, so amateurs must be extra careful if they intend to pursue this, although it is not recommended if you are not well – versed with the nuances of trekking. The mesmerizing sights such as that of lush green forests and crystal waterfalls make a trip to Mulayanagiri an exquisite one. The sight of the setting sun & dusk from the top of the peak is simply mind-blowing. It is often hidden by mist, however, it offers a breathtaking view of the Babu Budan Giri when the sky is clear.
We’ll also stop by the Jhari Falls, so that you can get rejuvenated, and chill for a while.
In the evening, we’ll head back to the campsite, and enjoy dinner by the bonfire.
We’ll try to wake up early to catch a glimpse of the sunrise. After having breakfast, we’ll either head out to explore Dattapeeta or go for river rafting at Bhadra (subject to availability). Later, we’ll board the bus and head back to Bangalore.
We’ll reach Bangalore by 10.30 PM (Approx)
