Hornbills are the largest fruit-eating birds found in the tropical forests of India. They eat a diverse array of fruits and disperse their seeds helping the plants to regenerate.
Hornbills are a very important cultural symbol in north-east India. Because of this, they are often hunted. The forests of the north-east also face significant threats from logging and habitat loss.
Dr. Rohit Naniwadekar is a scientist with the Nature Conservation Foundation. He has been studying hornbills for the last decade in the forests of north-east India.
