Giant space stations, check. Bizarre planets, check. Ridiculous creature design, check.
Suit up for French inter-galactic sci-fi superheroes in Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Insider, in association with Vkaoo, brings you an exclusive screening before the movie is officially released in India.
In the 28th century, Valerian and Laureline are special operatives charged with keeping order throughout the human territories. The two undertake a mission to Alpha, an ever expanding metropolis where species from across the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, intelligence, and culture.
You get to be one of the first people in the country to watch this one. It’s based on a comic book that predates Star Wars. Luc Besson is the French equivalent of Steven Spielberg; fast-paced, ultra-stylish, and hugely budgeted films with mass appeal are his thing.
The first of French comic book series Valérian et Laureline was released in 1967, making it older than most of the sci-fi you’ve come across in pop culture, including Star Wars. They’re actually time-travellers who work for the Spatio-Temporal Service, going on secret missions through time and space to guard the timeline.
