Everybody knows about the USA's Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World. But are you aware that there is a hidden Grand Canyon in India too?
A visit to Gandikota where adventure, archaeology, history and nature blends should be on everybody’s bucket list.
Gandikota is a small village in Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh, situated on the bank of river Penna. The fort of Gandikota acquired its name from two words “Gandi” (Telegu translates to the 'gorge’ which was formed between the Erramala range of hills) and “Kota” means fort. The fort was strategically built back in 13th Century and has a 5-mile perimeter wall guarding.
The fort includes 101 bastions, all of which are more than 40 feet (12 meters) high, and a gorge that stands at over 300 feet (91 meters) above the Penna River, temples, mosque, mausoleum, granary, water tank and even a village. The gorge used to provide natural defense.
The gorge is also known for its spectacular views and scenery. The rocks are naturally arranged over each other in a peculiar manner that it looks like a piece of art. The view of the gorge make the whole hike rewarding once one witness spectacular views with a beautiful color palette covering cluster of rocks.
