Apart from being popular for its coffee and people, Coorg is known for its skyscraping peaks and stupendous expanse of green landscapes—one among these is the mountain of Kotebetta that towers at 5500 feet. One of the most popular trekking destinations in South India, Coorg boasts about Kottebeta as the third highest peak after Tadiyandamol and Brahmagiri.
Kotebetta is located close to Madapur, between Somwarpet and Madikeri and is approximately 32 kilometres from Madikeri. If you are looking for a perfect weekend getaway to Coorg from Bangalore, Kotabetta should be on your wish list. Located approximately 5 hours 30 minutes away — the distance of 266 kilometres can be covered through an overnight bus journey.
Throughout the 14 kilometre trek to reach the pinnacle, the trail offers a treat to the eyes. While there is no doubt that you will come across carpets of coffee plantations, the trail will also take you through dense forests, narrow pathways and a wide expanse of lush green meadows.
Kottabetta translates to Fort Hill in Kannada. The locals here often tell stories about the Pandavas from Mahabhartha and believe that when in exile the brothers made the place their home for quite some time—they even built few stone houses, the remnants of which still remain scattered across Coorg.
An ancient yet functional Shiva temple close to the top of the peak marks the end of your ascend.
The captivating view of the sunset from the popular viewpoint called Raja’s seat in Madikeri redefines serenity and rejuvenates you, taking all your stress away.
The visit to Coorg is incomplete without visiting the famous Abbe falls that lay hidden amid the jungles and coffee plantations. The sound of the cascading water can be heard loud and clear from far and the hanging bridge offers a fantastic front view of the spectacular falls.
